High Tech Retro Digital Cameras

The back-to-the-future crowd will love two cameras currently on the market, the Leica X1 and the just-released, Fuji X100. The stylized cameras—point-and-shoots with big sensors—are comparable to the Sony Alpha in picture quality, but look like old film cameras.

Let’s begin with the last one, the Fuji X100 first. People are snapping up the $ 1,200 camera. B&H Camera is out of them. Since the camera does not have interchangeable lenses, the camera body is smaller, making it attractive to many street photographers. To be sure, you will question yourself as to whether or not you want to spend over a thousand dollars on a camera that has only one lens, the lens on it.

Fuji X100 makes old new again.

The lens on the camera is a fast f/2 23 mm, which gives a decent wide-angle view in landscape photography and allows you to capture complete scenes on the street as well as close-ups if you are near your subject(s).

Dials for exposure compensation and shutter speed at the top of the camera gives it the feel of an old film camera. The capability to shoot in Raw is a feature that is rarely seen in point-and-shoot cameras.

With the Fuji camera, street photographers will take joy when people don’t react fearfully when they notice the camera is aimed at them. They’re more likely to get questioned about their cool camera. It’s about the most nonthreatening camera you can get on the market today.

The APS-C 12.3 MP sensor (15.8 x 23.6 mm) ensures that little degradation of the image occurs at 100 percent resolution and makes cropping of the photo easier.

A similar Leica model was introduced a few years ago. The sensors of both cameras are the same size and have similar resolution. At f/2.8, the lens on the X1 is a bit slower than the one on the Fuju X100.

The Leica X1 is several hundred dollars more than the Fuji, a fact that doesn’t matter much if you’re a Leica fan.

In comparison of the two cameras it was found that the Leica X1 is more likely to give you more tones and less likely to blast whites. On the other hand, the Fuji X100 shoots at higher shutter speeds and shoots more images in a second than the Leica. If you’re looking for rapid fired shots, the Fuji would be your best bet.

Both cameras do very well at keeping a photo sharp at 100 percent resolution on the computer screen. The large sensors make them ideal for shooting stock and microstock photography. Both also perform well when taking shots at high ISO speeds.

Overall, most websites rate the Fuji better. You get more bang for your buck with that camera.
