Three Winning Cameras from Nikon

If you’re considering a Nikon camera, there is one thing that you should know. They do a much better job at giving noiseless photos at high ISO speeds, than many Canon models.

There’s no question as to who would win a debate about which company makes better cameras, Canon or Nikon. If the press releases are any indication of how one company fares with the other, Nikon would win. They publish press releases regarding their camera models far more often than Canon does.

Friends, family and strangers look to me when they are buying a camera. They find me by searching for photography books, and often email me asking what camera they should buy. I feel I always have to have the most up-to-date reply.

A good place to shop for new cameras quickly is to search the manufacturers’ press releases on their websites. I came across a press release in which Nikon announced that three of their cameras won the coveted reddot award for design. That sparked my interest as to what the reddot award was, what the cameras’ specs were, and what the reviews were saying. After that, I know whether or not I want to recommend the camera.

The reddot awards are a competition in which some camera makers participate. It is held every year in Singapore, and the winners receive prize money.

In an April, 2011 press release, Nikon announced that, indeed, that four of its products won the award. Three were their brand’s camera models—the Nikon D7000, COOLPIX P7000, COOLPIX S1100pj—each of which has a different design.

Nikon D7000 dSLR camera

The first reddot winner camera, Nikon D7000 is a 16.2 MP dSLR model with a CMOS (23.6 x 15.6mm) sensor isn’t bad for recommending to those who are new to dSLR cameras, but not so good for professionals because the camera does not have a full frame (24 X 36 mm) sensor. With a wide variety of scene modes that will comfort those who are used to them from using a point-and-shoot camera, taking a sharp, compelling picture is not a cumbersome task. It also takes pictures in Raw format, which is a big plus because of the postprocessing possibilities for improving the photo.

Nikon P7000 point-and-shoot

The second reddot winner, the high-end 10.1 MP Nikon Coolpix P7000 point-and-shoot. Although a bit pricey for a point-and-shoot camera, it’s one I would consider for snapshooters because it shoots in Raw format. It also has a bigger sensor than most point-and-shoots, one that is 7.17 mm X 5.31 mm, but still tiny for a dSLR, which means a good amount of loss of detail when blown-up. Nice thing about this camera is that it has manual, shutter priority and aperture priority modes.

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector camera

The last camera is truly a novelty because it is also a projector. It has a mighty 14 MP but with a tiny sensor that doesn’t mean much in terms of good quality, noiseless photos when blown-up. Also, no aperture or shutter priority modes on this one; it’s all automatic, perfect for a beginner. I’d buy this camera because it’s my guess in 20 years it’ll be a rare collectors item.
