Watch a Nat Geo Photographer Rescue Her Mom from Houston Floods

Watch a Nat Geo Photographer Rescue Her Mom from Houston Floods Want to see what it’s like to flee the devastating floods in Houston, Texas, caused by Hurricane Harvey? National Geographic conflict photographer Erin Trieb helped evacuate her mom this past weekend, and she documented the experience in the 5-minute video above. Trieb is usually based in Istanbul, Turkey, but she was back home in Texas when the hurricane struck. On August 27th, 2017, she opened up the camera app on her smartphone and began recording her journey in helping her mom, retrieving her cameras, and checking up on her sister. Well, shit got crazy. This is my...

These Aerial Photos Show Why Iceland is So Popular for Movies

These Aerial Photos Show Why Iceland is So Popular for Movies Everyone knows the classic images of Iceland. The famous Skogafoss, The Black Beach, The Blue Lagoon, you name it. On a recent trip to Iceland, we decided we wanted to shoot something a little bit different. While the Iceland Highlands is a popular area as well, it is much easier to get unique vantage points on a plane. For this series, we flew over the highlands for a couple of hours with varied conditions that Iceland is known for. We ended up with a set of images of both wide landscapes and alien textures straight down to show Iceland’s amazing landscapes. It is no wonder that a lot of...

I Gave My 3-Year-Old Daughter a DSLR, and Here’s What Happened

I Gave My 3-Year-Old Daughter a DSLR, and Here’s What Happened My 3-year-old daughter is at that phase in which she wants to do everything that daddy does. Apparently photography is not immune to this phase and seeing this as a potentially huge win (it’s not easy to coax her into driving 6 hours to go shoot some waterfall) I dug out my old Canon 40D DSLR and a 50mm prime lens that I had lying around and let the experiment begin! I started her out on AV at f/2.0 with 400 ISO thinking this would cover both indoor and outdoor shooting. Yes, I realize that effectively accomplished the same point-and-shoot functionality of the “green”...

This Photographer Used a McDonald’s Big Mac Box to Light Portraits

This Photographer Used a McDonald’s Big Mac Box to Light Portraits French photographer Philippe Echaroux recently decided to challenge himself in the area of shooting portraits of strangers. Instead of using high-end camera equipment, he decided to use an iPhone and light his subjects using a McDonald’s Big Mac box. “I like to challenge myself,” Echaroux tells PetaPixel. His lighting rig consisted of a flashlight, a drinking straw, and a Big Mac box: Here’s what it looks like when fully assembled and operational (for extra light reflection, Echaroux recommends rubbing oil from the fries onto the inside of the box): Echaroux then...

Canon M100: A Mirrorless Camera for Those Graduating from Smartphones

Canon M100: A Mirrorless Camera for Those Graduating from Smartphones Canon just announced a new mirrorless camera today, the EOS M100. The camera is designed to be “an excellent choice for those looking to step up from smartphone photography,” Canon says. Inside the M100 is a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor backed by a DIGIC 7 image processor. It has a...

This is the Best Photo Ever Shot of a Star Other Than Our Sun

This is the Best Photo Ever Shot of a Star Other Than Our Sun Astronomers using the ESO Very Large Telescope have created the most detailed photo ever of a star other than our own Sun. The subject of the photo is the supergiant Antares, visible to the unaided eye in the constellation Scorpius. “To the unaided eye the famous, bright star Antares shines with a strong red tint in the heart of the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion),” the ESO writes. “It is a huge and comparatively cool red supergiant star in the late stages of its life, on the way to becoming a supernova.” Antares has 12 times the mass of the Sun and a...
