A Peek at Xiaomi’s Sleek New Drone, Set to Arrive on May 25th

A Peek at Xiaomi’s Sleek New Drone, Set to Arrive on May 25th Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi is about to launch its very own drone, and some are speculating that it may be the first truly affordable UAV on the market. The news of the launch came from Xiaomi itself. A post on the company forums included the banner below (we’ve edited the crop above to increase exposure a bit and show more details in the picture) alongside text advertising a live-streaming event on May 25th at 7am ET on Mi.com. The posts moderator followed that up with the not-so-subtle tag line, “something wonderful and cool is flying to us very soon.” You can...

Shooting Coffee Splash Ad Photos for Peet’s Coffee

Shooting Coffee Splash Ad Photos for Peet’s Coffee Bill Cahill is a commercial photographer based in New York and Los Angeles who specializes in capturing liquids in motion. He was recently commissioned to shoot an ad campaign for Peet’s Coffee. The 11-minute video above offers a behind-the-scenes look at not only this specific project, but Cahill’s career journey as well. Peet’s is celebrating its 50 year anniversary this year, and the company wanted Bill to create 6 still and 5 motion shots for their new ad campaign — shots that would capture “taste.” “Bill was tasked to capture these over a...

I Shot Expired Film at the Kentucky Derby

I Shot Expired Film at the Kentucky Derby Photo projects usually are planned, researched and given approval to. This one just kind of fell into my lap after a single day of shooting on a bunch of expired film on a whim at the Daytona 500. I dug the results of that shoot, but what I really enjoyed was the process of getting back to making photography—especially sports photography—tangible. On top of that, the process of switching back to a mindset of thinking, waiting, and constructing a frame rather than motor-driving at 12 fps at sports was refreshing and just plain fun. After some conversations with my awesome editor Nate at...

The Difference Between RGB and CMYK

The Difference Between RGB and CMYK If you’ve seen the RGB and CMYK color models referenced all over the place but aren’t exactly sure how they work or what the difference is between them, check out this short 2-minute video. Express Cards explains why the RGB additive color model is used in digital displays, while the CMYK subtractive model is used for color printing. [via...

Canon Files Patent for Impressive EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 Lens

Canon Files Patent for Impressive EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 Lens As lens patents go, this one is pretty radical. Canon has filed a patent that shows the optical design for an impressive EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 super zoom. No, this is not a super zoom camera, it’s a lens meant for full-frame Canon DSLRs. The patent was spotted by Canon Rumors, and it might fall closer to wishful thinking than actual future product. As CR points out, a lens with that kind of optical formula would have to be “quite large in size” (read: massive) unless Canon has a special optical trick up their sleeve. But that isn’t stopping us from hoping. The rumor...

Tainted Love: Why Photographers Fail

Tainted Love: Why Photographers Fail Recently there has been a spate of very sad, and ultimately defeatist articles decrying the “death of photography”. We have no shortage of examples. Seriously. In all their pain and detailed examples of how the art and business of photography have been “ruined” (their words), I can find little to no examples of the basic, most important reason that photographers are falling behind. And that is: Photographers are wildly devotedly, happily, and ecstatically in LOVE with the processes of photography. Like any devoted partner, they see the relationship as sacrosanct, and the most...

Funny Photographer ‘Confessions’ You Can Probably Relate To

Funny Photographer ‘Confessions’ You Can Probably Relate To What’s your deepest… darkest photography secret? Do you occasionally give in and shoot *shudder* Auto? Is your most popular photo taken with *shudder* an iPhone? This silly DRTV video is all about these kinds of “shocking” photographer confessions. Warning: The ‘confession’ starting at 3:55 may be considered inappropriate by some (or many). Proceed at your own risk. Over the top (as usual), the best part of this video is actually the confessions it has inspired over on Reddit and in the YouTube comments. Scroll down to watch the video for yourself, and...

Wedding Photographer Falls Into Frozen Lake… Keeps On Shooting

Wedding Photographer Falls Into Frozen Lake… Keeps On Shooting This is some serious dedication. When wedding and adventure sports photographer Nathan Welton fell through the ice and into a frozen lake while shooting a wedding ceremony in Colorado, he didn’t stop or let his assistants take over. Nope… he just kept on shooting. The fateful fall happened while Nathan was shooting a wedding ceremony for Tara and Brad on the shores of Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. “Tara and Brad had tamped out a little ceremony ‘platform’ in the powder on the shores of Bear Lake, but it was impossible to tell where the ground...

The $5 Raspberry Pi Zero is Now Camera Compatible

The $5 Raspberry Pi Zero is Now Camera Compatible We’ve shared a number of do-it-yourself camera projects involving Raspberry Pi in the past. If you’re interested in trying your hand at one, it’s now even cheaper: the ultra affordable $ 5 Raspberry Pi Zero now has a camera connector. The Raspberry Pi Zero computing board was launched last November in order to drive down the price of DIY computing projects even more than the original Raspberry Pi. One thing it lacked, however, was a connector that allows it to be used with Raspberry Pi camera modules. This “missing feature” has now been added. The updated...
